THE PAINT OF CRESPI I ALEMANY Guillem Àngel Crespí i Alemany (Santa Margalida, 1963), is a painter known for his originality, which any observer looks at with indifference. It is quite difficult for me to label him in a traditional pictorial school. He is among the naturism, the realism, the postimpressionism, the “Action Painting”… He has made a symbiosis of all of them what is his personal style. With the three basic elements that he uses: The ink, the water and the acrylic paint, he has got to paint works that beyond the shown objects. His paintings evoke sounds, smells, make you experience many feelings, memories, they make us think. They are polychrome expressions of feelings. If the aesthetics of the “Action Painting” stressed the painting act itself, apart from any expressive or representative act that it could have, Crespí i Alemany applies it to those things that he interprets for his works, endowing them with a peculiar, unique and inimitable atmosphere. If the painting is the art that stimulates the imagination, he, by painting a crowing cock that heralds the first day light, wakes you up and encourages you to undertake your tasks with optimism. Three violins and notes in the air make me recall a symphony that I heard in the large hall of the Moscow Conservatory. On the rough surface, prepared with several materials (paper, sand, water and acrylic paint), using the “dripping” technique, emerges what seems to be a field with flowers during the spring, or that the notes leave their instruments, which are spread all over the work. His painting is unmistakable. The different colors, the different tonalities, the art explosion emerges from his hands, ends spread over the cloth or over the paper, as Pollock would do. This need of dirtying, of seeing that the water flows, the colors start joining and separating themselves, make you feel his huge happiness, his great human touch and his knowing of the technique. Although his subject matter are not abstract, as Crespí i Alemany says that he paints what he sees by interpreting it his own way, I add that he paints what he sees and what he loves, and this is his family, his town, the toys, his ideas, what deserves to remain in the observers’ retina. He follows the tradition of his grandfather Guillem Crespí i Coll “ Es panderer ” who, with his “GLOSES” left a stamp on the history of the culture of Mallorca. Eloina Rapp Lantaron |
